ULTRA LOW SULFUR DIESEL FAQ SHEET

ULSD will be available nation-wide summer of 2006. However, some industries are
being told to start using the product as soon as possible.  These types of industries include:  Bus lines, Refuse Haulers, Government vehicles, agriculture pumps and equipment, construction and school busses. Below are some frequently asked questions regarding ULSD.

What is Ultra Low Sulfur diesel?

ULSD is an environmentally friendly fuel that has undergone further refinement to reduce the sulfur level in the fuel to 15 parts per million or less. This allows the fuel to be used in vehicles equipped with catalytic particulate traps. Standard diesel has a sulfur level of 500 ppm.

Can anyone with a diesel engine use this fuel?

ULSD can be used in almost any diesel engine.  Some older trucks (1994 and older), and especially those lacking computer monitored pollution control devices may experience some loss in fuel economy (estimated 2%). ULSD has a lubricity additive to assure use of the fuel will not void any manufacturer’s engine warranties. Newer trucks are able to use the fuel without any alterations to their vehicle.

What is the difference between ULSD and CARB diesel?

Just as the name implies, the sulfur content of 15ppm is much lower than CARB diesels 500ppm. Lower sulfur content can reduce particulate matter pollution by 15% when used in standard diesel engines. ULSD is capable of reducing particulate matter, hydrocarbons, and other toxins by more than 90% when utilized in vehicles equipped with a catalytic particulate trap. The low sulfur also prevents the corrosion of engine parts, helping reduce wear and tear on the engine and operational costs.

Will I get better mileage from the new diesel?

There should be no operational differences between ULSD and CARB diesel. Fuel economy, reliability and durability will remain the same.

The price be the same or higher for the ULSD?

The price per gallon should only be a few pennies higher than current CARB diesel.
